Elephant Hide

There were large words painted on cinder block walls,
Punishing our kinder inclinations, treating poetry to a kick of heroin.

Your monthly slip into depression cured me of hope.
Melted chocolate left in shirt pocket, dawn of purple, hard and pressing.

If an elephant puked on your shoes it would be denied.
There is no reason to believe Modigliani could place his hand on railing.

Pilate flew into a rage and tipped Christ over with his Cain.
How we draw ourselves in the mirror can defend nothing, beets for dinner.

How to hide from our neighbors became our only game.
Jungle or desert it makes no difference, all is lost when nature takes a bow.
